(VNA) – Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and his government highly value Vietnam’s important role in the region and the world and want to bolster bilateral ties across diverse areas.

Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie Marie-Claude Bibeau made it clear while talking with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh during a reception in Hanoi on December 14.

She said during the first foreign trip to attend the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in the Philippines last month after taking office, PM Trudeau actively met President Truong Tan Sang to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties, adding that her four-day visit is to realise the outcomes of their meeting.

The Deputy PM thanked PM Trudeau and the Canadian government for the recently-announced aid worth 12.9 million CAD for a cooperative development model in Vietnam, as well as their effective support to Vietnam’s social development.

He suggested facilitating high-level visits, promoting economic-trade-investment links in order to tap Vietnam’s existing potential and opportunities brought about by the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

The host asked the Canadian International Development Agency to continue prioritising aid to Vietnam, particularly in the fields of green growth, climate change response, education, poverty reduction and in hosting the APEC 2017 in the central city of Da Nang.

Minister Bibeau also held a working session with the Ministry of Planning and Investment. She is due to work with leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on an assistance plan for Vietnam, and meet authorities of the central province of Da Nang to discuss support to local education.

Her visit will last until December 16.
